Like every football fan, I believe I’m right on most debates and topics (yes, Messi is far better than Ronaldo has ever been and no, the Invincibles are not the greatest ever Premier League side), so what better way to show this than start my own blog?
My name is Ben and I’m currently studying History at Durham University, heading into my dreaded third year full of dissertation work and exams. I’ve always considered the best jobs to be ones you don’t see as a job, so naturally my dream is to become a sports journalist, and work on my main passion in life. This blog is my way of writing about everything football, with a few other sports thrown in for good measure.
“Since I was old enough to understand what sport was, it’s been the centre of my life….”
With my Dad and Uncle as lifelong Liverpool fans, I was just 7 when I attended my first Liverpool game, but I’d been kicking a football round my garden for years before that (though admittedly I was not an up-and-coming Steven Gerrard!). Basically, since I was old enough to understand what sport was, it’s been the centre of my life.
Over the next five to ten years my love for sport continued to grow. Football has always been my main passion, but through school sports, newspapers, and TV I gained knowledge and passion for other sports including cricket, rugby, tennis and more. The Olympics in 2012 was another turning point, as alongside watching every event I possibly could, I was lucky enough to experience the Olympic magic first hand at the diving and football. Through secondary school I took part in tennis, rugby, cricket, rowing, squash, badminton and, of course, the obligatory hour of lunchtime football.
“Every aspect of society links to sport…”
Once I moved to University, I got involved in my college football team, and have written articles for the sport’s section of Durham’s student newspaper – Palatinate. Sport for me is more than just physical action – it’s a community that can bring joy to so many (and sadness for Everton fans). Every aspect of society links to sport and the number of angles that different sports can be studied and analysed from fascinates me : economy, racism, drugs, gambling, psychology, mental health, religion, management… the list goes on and on. I’ll be discussing any number of these topics as well as giving my views on current sporting events. Expect matchday blogs, previews, quizzes, stats, book reviews, tactical analysis, predictions and more.
Enjoy,
Ben
