Tyler Morton scores winner in Liverpool U21s’ 1-0 win over Manchester United U21s

Tyler Morton strengthened his first team credentials as he scored the winner in Liverpool under-21s 1-0 victory over Manchester United under-21s.

It was Morton’s third goal in as many games at U21 level as he continues to push for a spot in Arne Slot’s squad.

The win takes Liverpool up to second in Premier League 2 – behind Manchester City on goal difference alone – whilst United sit 11th.

After a poor start to their Football League Trophy campaign Barry Lewtas will be happy with his side’s start to the league season as they made it five wins out of six at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium.

Liverpool goalkeeper Kornel Misciur made numerous saves throughout the game in a strong performance whilst fellow 17-year-old Carter Pinnington also impressed.

A scrappy first 20 minutes passed without much incident except for an injury to Liverpool’s Tommy Pilling, who was replaced by ex-United Academy graduate Kieran Morrison.

Misciur made two comfortable saves but it took until the 44th minute for the first clear opportunity to appear.

United’s Dan Gore played an inch-perfect pass inside the area giving Ethan Ennis an opportunity to put the hosts ahead but the winger’s shot was superbly saved by Misciur.

The second-half followed a similar pattern with Misciur denying Gore and Ethan Williams with two brilliant stops.

In the 67th minute – against the run of play – the United keeper was caught playing out from the back with Morton’s initial shot being blocked before he calmy rounded the keeper to chip in from the edge of the area.

Morton’s goal was one of Liverpool’s two shots on target in what was a strong defensive display.

United pressed hard for an equaliser but Liverpool’s defence stayed resilient to ensure a well-earnt victory.
